A shorter code to help people suffering from mental health problems will soon be in operation across the United States, making help even more accessible in times of crisis, as part of a larger plan to address mental health challenges.
The switch to an easy-to-remember code – 988 – will “make it easier for individuals in crisis to access the help they need and decrease the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health issues,” as stated by the Federal Communications Commission.
A 10-digit number has been in operation since 2005, and for the last 17 years, more than 20 million calls have been placed. The new three-digit code will have the same purpose: to get in touch with trained counselors – through call, text, or online chat – from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network consisting of more than 200 local crisis centers across the country. The existing suicide prevention number will stay active once 988 will be in operation. Public health officials wish for mental health issues to be taken care of with the same diligence as physical ailments.
