Here, Beauty Doesn’t Rhyme With Cruelty Anymore

Mexico becomes the first North American country to ban animal testing for cosmetics, a decision supported by big companies in the beauty business.

“Today we are approving a historic reform: the prohibition to use them as experiments for beauty products,” says Bill sponsor Senator Ricardo Monreal. “Beauty cannot be cruelty, and that’s why we senators are saving the animals and are issuing laws that firmly prohibit the use of animals for experiments in beauty, cosmetology, or of any type. Arriba los animales!”

Humane Society International – Mexico and the non-governmental organization Te Protejo pushed to change the law. All 103 senators voted in favor of the bill that bans testing on animals as part of cosmetic research which contains individual cosmetic ingredients, or for finished cosmetic products. Importation of cosmetics with ingredients that have been tested on animals is also prohibited. Mexico becomes the 41st country to ban animal testing for cosmetics, with companies such as Avon, L’Oréal, Lush, P&G, and Unilever approving the cruelty-free shift occurring around the world and working to develop alternative methods.
