No More Disposable Plastic Bags on This Island

As of December 1st, after months of phasing out single-use non-degradable plastic products on its territory, the island province of Hainan, in China, has banned disposable plastic bags and tableware.

The province of Hainan has been proactive in the development of eco-friendly substitutes to plastic. So far, seven local companies have managed to produce fully biodegradable plastic products. By the end of the year, their shared total of biodegradable plastic films and bags should reach 32,000 tons. As for tableware, the total should be 11,000 tons.

The first batch of banned items includes also packaging bags, meal boxes, bowls, drink cups, and straws that are not made from biodegradable polymers. China wishes to have plastic pollution under control by 2025.
