Overfishing Drops to a Record-Breaking Low in the EU

An annual report has shown 50% more fish populations in 2018 in comparison to 2010, with the European Union achieving a record drop in overfishing within its waters.

‘The news on sustainable fisheries is unequivocally good,’ says Europêche managing director, Daniel Voces. ‘The majority of fish stocks in the North-East Atlantic are healthy and thriving. That’s thanks to many years of sacrifices being made by the EU fishing fleets and intensive collaboration with scientists and public authorities to improve fishing practices and fisheries management. Overfishing in the EU is at an all-time low.’

The annual report, by the European Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries, additionally shows that the amount of damaged fish stocks was reduced by almost half in comparison to 2007.
