Heroes USAPhilanthropist Donates Millions Towards Education
An educational nonprofit in the United States just received its largest unsolicited gift in the program’s history — a whopping $133.5 million dollars, donated by philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
The nonprofit, Communities in School (CIS), operates in nearly 3,000 different schools in America, helping students navigate a broad range of issues both inside and outside of the classroom. Currently, the program supports around 1.6 million kids across the USA, aiding those who are at risk of dropping out and providing resources to help young people be successful. Scott’s donation will allow the charity to positively impact even more students.
“At a time when the global pandemic has particularly hurt students with fewer community resources or adequate supports, the investment will help CIS to carry out its mission to break down the systemic barriers that stand in the way of opportunity and student success,” CIS stated in a press release.
Scott, the ex-wife of former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, has donated over $8.5 billion to a multitude of organizations since her 2019 divorce from Bezos. She also signed the Giving Pledge in 2019 where she joined other billionaires in a vow to give away the majority of their wealth to charitable endeavors.
