2025 has been off to a great start in California, the United States, as clean electricity generation reached a new high, most notably with solar, meeting 100% of demand in the middle of winter.
For four consecutive days – from February 14 to 17 – wind, water, and solar (WWS) generation exceeded 100% of grid demand at times, an impressive feat for half past the midpoint of winter.
Since the beginning of 2025, there has been a decline in gas use and an increase in wind and battery output. WWS electricity output increased by 18% year-over-year and is 32% higher than gas. Also, gas usage has declined by 28%, solar electricity generation surged by 33.8%, and battery output increased by 78%. The first time California reached – albeit briefly – 101% renewable electricity was on 2 May 2022, a feat now becoming routine. On average, 1.6 hours per day are fully powered by WWS.
