Thanks, Conservation: Elephant Populations Remain Stable

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) released a 2023 survey that reveals that elephant populations are stable in Southern Africa.

“These results are very satisfying, and we congratulate the KAZA Transfrontier Conservation Area Secretariat, the States, and their partners for their joint efforts to maintain stable elephant populations despite the threats posed by climate change, habitat loss, and poaching,” says Philip Kuvawoga, IFAW’s program manager for habitat conservation

The study was completed in the Kavango-Zambèze Transfrontier Area (KAZA) which includes the countries of Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. 227,900 individual elephants were recorded across the region, indicating that elephant populations across all countries remained stable, except in Zambia where the elephant population declined. The KAZA conservation area is the largest protected area in Africa, with countless species calling this reserve home.
