This Country Is Bidding Adieu to Dog Racing

The dog-racing industry in the United States is on the right track to come to an end altogether, much to the delight of animal welfare groups that have been advocating for the demise of the industry known for mistreating greyhounds.

“This has become one of the signature animal welfare debates of our time,” says Carey Theil, executive director of GREY2K, one of the animal welfare organization that spent decades exposing the mistreatment of racing dogs.

In 2021, in Florida – the mecca of dog racing – it was voters who took the initiative to put an end to the sport by banning bettings on greyhounds. By the end of 2022, West Memphis and Arkansas will close down their racetracks, leaving racing only in the state of West Virginia. The Humane Society is among the other animal welfare groups which have argued that greyhound racing is a cruel practice.
