Drive-by Museum for Art Lovers in Lockdown

A drive-by exhibition in the United States has given art lovers a creative alternative to the museums and galleries that have been closed or that have gone virtual due to the coronavirus lockdowns.

The Drive-By-Art (Public Art in This Moment of Social Distancing) show took place this month outside of the homes of the diverse participating artists living in Long Island, New York, where visitors viewed their works either by car, by foot or by bike.

“It’s a unique treasure trove where you follow the clues, see the art and see where artists live,” says participating East Hampton artist Suzanne Anker to the Times. “There is a whole diversity of places and the kind of intimacy that you don’t typically get to experience.”

Installations varied from historic images such as a meeting between Elvis Presley and President Nixon to works of art related to the social distancing times of COVID-19: showcasing a socially-distanced restaurant meal, for example, or a group of folding chairs placed six feet apart and highlighting time passing in isolation. A similar drive-by exhibition is scheduled to be held at the end of May in Los Angeles.
