While Library Is Closed, Kids Get Their Books by Drone

When libraries in Virginia, USA closed due to COVID-19, one middle school librarian couldn’t get her mind off how she could keep kids reading – and she successfully pitched her solution to a tech company: deliver books by drone!

“I’m always trying to come up with ways to get library resources into the hands of my students and thought this would be an excellent way to do that,” says Christiansburg’s Montgomery County Public School librarian Kelly Passek. “With quarantining and social distancing and our move to remote learning, it became even more important to find a way to get kids these reading materials while social distancing.”

According to a spokesperson from the drone service Wing, which Passek pitched her idea to, the school district is now the world’s first to offer a library book drone delivery service.
