We’re Seeing a Spectacular Drop in This Fatal Disease Here

Kenya has seen a 93 per cent decrease in malaria deaths over the past eight years, according to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The report shows malaria-related fatalities in the nation declined from 15,061 in 2015 to 1,060 in 2023. Kenya even surpassed WHO’s target, emphasizing the effectiveness of the nation’s varied public health efforts.

This significant decline is essentially thanks to Kenya intensifying its efforts in the fight against the fatal disease, including deploying insecticide-treated bed nets, distributing a new malaria vaccine, improving diagnostic tools, and increasing access to antimalarial treatments. The country has also been heavily supported by international partners, receiving over $183.6 million from donors such as the Global Fund and the World Bank. Ensuring that progress is here to stay is a challenge that can only be achieved should the nation continue prioritising malaria prevention and elimination in the coming years.
