Shopping for Greens? Here Is the Farm Inside the Supermarket!

Yesterday I went to a big supermarket I hadn’t been to in a while. I wanted to buy some parsley, but couldn’t find it, where I had remembered it being before. I asked one of the attendants, but her answer puzzled me: “It’s over there, next to our farm.”

Farm? I followed the direction she had pointed. And there it was, brightly lit and behind windows: rows and rows of stacked plants. Indeed: a vertical farm right here in this supermarket. I didn’t only get the parsley I wanted, I also bought chives, green salad, and fresh mint.

Back in my car on the way home, my bag full of very fresh greens, I started thinking about this truly great innovation: Because there is no energy wasted bringing the greens from a farm to the supermarket, it is sustainable. The signs said it was all organic with less water and no chemicals used. And it just looked so lovely. Wanted to share this with the twib community, because wouldn’t the world truly be a little bit better, if every supermarket had such a farm?!
