Celebrations at the Zoo: Endangered Red Panda Gives Birth to Healthy Cub

Great news for this endangered species: a red panda was born on July 13th at the Toronto Zoo in Canada, and the little male cub and his mama are both doing well!

According to the World Wildlife Fund website, there are only around 10,000 red pandas left in the world. The Toronto Zoo has confirmed that this new addition is alive and healthy, but cannot be viewed by the public yet.

“Red pandas are an endangered species due to illegal hunting and habitat loss, so contributing to sustaining their managed populations in AZA accredited zoos is not only a success for your zoo, but also helps to educate our guests about the conservation efforts of this extraordinary species,” explains Toronto Zoo CEO Dolf DeJong.

This red male panda, which remains unnamed, is the facilities third successful birth of an endangered panda species in just over 25 years.
