Environment UkraineConservation Efforts Protect More Natural Landscapes
Conservation teams in Ukraine secured major protections for wildlife and habitats in 2025, helping preserve ecosystems and strengthen long-term environmental resilience during wartime.
Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group (UNCG) described its work as a commitment to “standing in defence of places that cannot defend themselves”, reflecting the organisation’s focus on protecting landscapes and biodiversity despite ongoing disruption and uncertainty.
The conservation group achieved 43 legal victories preventing harmful development projects and helped establish 10 new Protected Areas covering more than 2,470 acres. Its work represented 34% of all new Protected Areas created across the country in 2025. Scientists also recorded 249,564 species observations in the global GBIF biodiversity database, creating one of Eastern Europe’s largest annual biodiversity contributions and building a scientific foundation for future restoration efforts.
