The downside to having a fresh, live Christmas tree to celebrate the holiday is that millions of pine trees are left to die after the season ends. So one company in the UK came up with a solution: rentable Christmas trees.
Jonathan Mearns and Catherine Loveless founded London Christmas Tree Rental three years ago, reaching more people with each year that passes. The average Christmas tree takes 10 to 12 years to grow; this concept of renting and returning the tree allows the tree to continue to grow and thrive year after year rather than ending up in a landfill.
Customers order a tree online to be picked up, enjoyed over the season, and collected in January. The trees are then replanted, with founder Loveless explaining, “It goes back to the farm where it’s put into a special irrigation system, and then it’s cared for until the following year.” What’s more, customers are encouraged to name their tree and are given the option to rent the same tree the following year — caring for the planet one Christmas tree at a time!
