New Dads Get to Stay Home Longer Here

Morocco’s labor law has been rectified to increase the paid paternity leave as part of a social pact aimed at improving the working class conditions, a decision most welcomed by national labor unions.

“Increasing the paternity leave to a paid 15-day leave is a measure that aims to support new mothers, by allowing them to enjoy the support of their partners during that important period of their lives,” says Ghita Mezzour, Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform. “The measure is in accordance with the constitution that stipulates that the education of children is a common and shared responsibility.”

Only three days were granted to new dads. Such an extension is of historical and social importance since it implies an increase in the national minimum wage and in family allowances for children. As a matter of fact, an additional 100-dirhams ($27) allowance is granted for the 4th, 5th, and 6th child. Medium and long-term occupational illnesses are also covered by the amendment. Those modifications show that the living conditions of the working class remain a priority for the government.
