Rare Sight of Over 1500 Special Dolphins

Over 1,500 Risso dolphins were spotted on the California coast in a rare spectacle.

“It was just an amazing sight. Just little white dots everywhere, and every single one of those white dots was a dolphin,” says Evan Brodsky, captain of the boat that captured the drone footage.

The “super pod” of Risso dolphins was recently captured by drone thanks to a small whale-watching tour operator who just happened to be cruising along the Monterey coast at the right time. For a cetacean that typically prefers deeper offshore waters, the spectacle was an extraordinary sight to see. Likely, these dolphins were part of several smaller pods that joined together to head south, according to the team at Monterey Bay Whale Watch. The recently captured drone footage is available for viewing on social media.
