Sound Can Heal Our Body… and Regrow Bone Cells!

Researchers from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Australia, developed a high-frequency sound wave device that transforms human stem cells into bone cells, helping the body heal itself in a promising discovery for cancer and degenerative disease patients.

“The sound waves cut the treatment time usually required to get stem cells to begin to turn into bone cells by several days,” says co-lead author Dr Amy Gelmi, a Vice-Chancellor’s Research Fellow at the RMIT. “This method also doesn’t require any special ‘bone-inducing’ drugs and it’s very easy to apply to the stem cells.”

The small, scalable, and simple device emits high-frequency sound waves at human stem cells, allowing the body to heal itself by regrowing bone cells in a method that could one day help patients regrow bone tissue. When tested on adult stem cells, it was possible to trigger the differentiation of stem cells into bone cells in only five 10-minute treatments. “We can use the sound waves to apply just the right amount of pressure in the right places to the stem cells, to trigger the change process,” said Distinguished Professor Leslie Yeo, co-lead author of the paper
