You thought that earth’s coral reefs are doomed? Well, now there is hope!

The World Heritage Committee has removed the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System from the List of World Heritage in Danger recently.

A reason for the removal were special safeguarding measures implemented by the Belize government. They included putting oil exploration on hold in the entire maritime zone of Belize as well new laws for the protection of mangrove forests.

The reef is the largest in the Northern Hemisphere and home to many rare species, including the marine turtle, the manatee and the American marine crocodile.

Oil exploration and the destruction of mangroves threatened to destroy this outstanding landscape – which is why it was put on the list in 2009.
