“Big Plans” for This Country’s Green Energy Transformation

The production of green energy sources in India is expanding, and the country intends to reach its environmental goal of having 50% of its electricity coming from green energy sources by 2030, notably by adding 405 gigawatts (GW) of renewables to its energy mix.

“India has big plans,” states Vibhuti Garg, senior energy specialist at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis and Climate Energy Finance. “India is energy hungry and this hunger will only increase with our economic and population growth.”

Every year until the end of the decade, India will add between 35 and 40 GW of renewable energy to its energy mix, powering up to 30 million homes on a yearly basis. According to its predictions, the government plans on producing even more renewable energy – a total of 500 GW – in the same time frame, reducing the share of fossil fuel sources in the energy mix from 59% today to 31.6% by 2030. Private clean energy companies alone will add 151 GW of renewable energy. For instance, Adani Green Energy will account for the largest single addition by boosting its renewable energy production from 5.8 GW to 45 GW by 2030. In order to reach its 2030 green goals, India will require massive investments, around $223 billion.
